Bob Nault commits to bring clean drinking water to Neskantaga First Nation

(KENORA) September 16, 2019 – Today, the Hon. Bob Nault, Liberal candidate for the Kenora Riding, released the following statement reaffirming the Liberal Government’s commitment to bring safe, clean, and reliable drinking water to Neskantaga First Nation:

“As I have said repeatedly, all Northerners, regardless of where they live, deserve access to clean, safe, drinking water. That’s why we are working to resolve the current issue with Neskantaga First Nation’s water system, in full partnership with Neskantaga First Nation and Matawa Tribal Council.

Yesterday, Minister O’Regan spoke directly with Chief Moonias to express his firm commitment to resolving this issue and ensuring access to clean water for the community.

“In order to address the immediate needs of residents, safe drinking water is being made available, and the Department committed to increase the amount of bottled water available for the community. The Nursing Station will remain open for community members and medical evaluation continues to be available for those who need it. Assistance is being made available to individuals who wish to remain in the community and we will continue to work by providing assistance, as required to those transported to Thunder Bay.

In addition, officials who were made aware of the latest problems with the water system late Friday, are currently working with the community to ensure that repairs begin today to resolve the situation and restore water pressure.  The work is expected to be completed by Wednesday to bring an immediate source of clean drinking water to community residents.

“Neskantaga First Nation is now in the final stages of completing construction upgrades to the existing water treatment plant.  In July 2017, approximately $8.8 million was committed by the Liberal government to upgrade Neskantaga First Nation’s water treatment system, including an addition to the existing water plant. When completed the water treatment plant that will provide safe, clean, drinking water for generations to come.”
